Week 8- mentoring adults vs teaching children

This weeks essential question looks at how mentoring adults is different from teaching children. I was not able to look at the link provided as nothing loaded.

According to an article on Reach to Teach there are huge differences between teaching adults vs. kids. The article spoke about self-motivation and classroom management . When teaching kids it takes work to make sure they are all focused on completing their work. They often need many reminders to complete their task. This problem exists a lot less often because typically adults taking a class want to be there and are motivated to stay focused to learn the material.

Next the article spoke about the context of the class. For kids the lessons tend to be focused around one topic and often geared towards a students specific grade and age. The materials taught to kids is often straight forward. The contents of a lesson fir adults on the other hand need to be more varied and relevant to their lives in order to keep their attention. Teachers of adults need to be prepared to teach fairly complex ideas and answer questions at a higher order thinking level.

Fun and games were also discussed in an article written by Long (2015). Games are still use useful too for teaching both kids and adults but they should be approached differently. For kids games in the classroom might be a board game, dominos, a smart board reading game. For adults it might be jeopardy or something that gets the older students up and moving.

Lastly this article spoke about your relationship with the students. With kids there is a clear expectation and understanding that the teacher is the authority in the classroom. They are in charge of the class. Most teachers don't have a problem establishing this in a classroom. For adults this is the exact opposite. It is important to remember that they may be similar or older than you. Adult teachers need to keep in mind that it is still important to build relationships with their students, but needs to be approached in a different manor than kids.

Taking all this into mind as teachers we need to remember that in the end a teachers goal is to have a positive relationship with each student. It is important to remember that in order to be a successful teacher we need to take into account the age of our students and make sure we meet their needs.
